Damaris Kientz scores a goal and sets season-high in saves in narrow loss.

IRVINE, Calif. — Eight of Biola's first 10 matches of this 2024 season have come against opponents ranked inside of the top-25. Their most recent opponent, No. 13 UC San Diego, rounded out that number in the second-ever meeting between these two sides.

The Eagles and Tritons kicked off their play at day two of the historic Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a closely contested matchup of top west coast teams. Aside from a quick start in the first quarter for UCSD, this match was as close as it gets between the two teams.

The 4-1 first quarter provided just enough margin for the Tritons to work a 10-7 victory over Head Coach Sarah Orozco's scrappy Eagles. Biola managed to outscore the Tritons 4-3 in a physical and exciting second half. But, the one-goal advantage over that final 16 minutes was not quite enough to overcome the strong start from UCSD.

The goal that made the difference in that second half came in the final second of the game as Biola played its goalkeeper forward past center and Damaris Kientz slung a shot to tally the first goal of her three-year Biola career. Kientz' goal added to a strong day for her, as she had already set a season-high with 13 saves.

Outside of Kientz, the offense was spread around well for Biola with six other players scoring a goal. Ava LoBue and Kientz scored back-to-back in the fourth quarter, which was the first time in the game that BU managed to score two goals with no UCSD tally in between.

After Veralie Naranjo scored on Biola's first possession of the first quarter, Biola was held off the board for the rest of the frame. During that time, UCSD scored four goals in a row to build what would become the game-changing lead.

The Eagles scored the first goal in each period during this one as the held in tough with a top-15 team. This outing was a three-goal improvement from the last time UCSD and Biola went toe-to-toe back in 2022. That game was also a neutral site contest that went in favor of the Tritons, 17-10.

Up next for Biola is a 4 p.m. tilt against Pomona-Pitzer. This game will also be played at the UC Irvine Anteater Aquatics Center. Follow the live statistics from that game at https://www.thefosh.net/live/16403.
