Biola Kicks Off Weekend Against No. 3 Fresno State

Biola joined the prestigious Barbara Kalbus Invite on Friday and took on a top-three squad in Fresno State.

IRVINE, Calif. --- A loaded field of teams collected at UC Irvine for the weekend for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. Biola women's water polo began the festivities with a battle against No. 3 Fresno State (11-3). The Bulldogs pulled away from the Eagles (3-6) in a 17-5 match.

The Eagles entered the ranked matchup receiving votes in the latest CWPA poll, while FSU sat at number three.

BU began on the front foot on Friday, recording the first goal of the game. Veralie Naranjo cashed in on the team's second possession with help from Maria Roldan Gonzalez who grabbed the assist. Naranjo also helped set up the play, drawing an exclusion for a BU powerplay.

An answer from Fresno State evened the game at one but Naranjo was not done. Lizzy Birch earned the team a five-meter penalty at the next opportunity. Naranjo stepped in for the shot and netted it for a 2-1 Biola edge.

The Bulldogs tallied the next four scores and took control. Roldan Gonzalez grabbed her own goal before the end of the first but then the BU offense went quiet. The second quarter went by without a BU goal, as Fresno State opened up a 11-3 halftime lead.

Naranjo completed her hat trick to start the third and Rachel Spadt added a score in the fourth, as the BU squad picked up five goals in the contest.

Birch contributed a pair of assists on Friday to go with three drawn exclusions.

Biola will return to action on Saturday to continue the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at 11:45 am against UC San Diego or Cal at the Anteater Aquatic Complex.
