Fabulous Friday

Biola picked up the sweep on Friday afternoon, defeating Westmont at Eagles Diamond.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles eked out a win in game two, beating out the pressure situations late in the contest. BU (7-4) earned the necessary outs down the stretch and logged the 4-2 win over Westmont (7-5-1) in game two.

Biola held a lead going into the final two innings but the BU relievers had their work cut out for them. Up 4-1, Gabe Magallan quickly faced a bases loaded jam with no outs on the board in the top of the sixth. A single from Westmont brought in one score but three strikeouts kept the other runners at bay for a 4-2 edge heading into the seventh and final frame.

Two errors kicked off the seventh, opening the door for the Warriors. A strikeout moved BU in the right direction and Caleb Bennett took over with a save in sight. The runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch but Bennett did not back down, fanning the next two to close out the game and secure the BU win with a save.

Blake Wentz drew the start and worked his way through four frames with one run allowed. The sophomore recorded his first win of the season with 61 pitches in the outing.

The middle infield offered a pair of impressive plays, logging a 6-4-3 double play in the third and a 4-6-3 double play in the fifth.

On offense, Jonathan Kumai came up with a clutch hit in the second frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kumai lobbed the ball into left-center and brought home Bobby Brown and Sam Lisiak for a 2-1 Biola advantage.

The lead for Biola lengthened in the fifth behind a double from Wyatt Duncan. Austin Carillo reached base by an error and stole second, before the two-base hit from Duncan scored the left fielder. A wild pitch followed to move Duncan to third and Brown capitalized with a sacrifice fly to the center field wall.

Throughout the afternoon, BU pitching stepped up in dangerous positions, holding Westmont to 1-9 hitting with runners in scoring position.

Biola will complete its four-game series with Westmont on the road with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:00 am.
