Drawing Even

The margins were razor thin on Saturday between Biola and Westmont with one run separating the two teams through two games.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- After a Friday sweep for the Eagles (7-5-1) at home against Westmont (8-5-1), the two teams traveled to Santa Barbara to finish the four-game non-conference series. Both games reached its scheduled end in a tie with WC taking game one in extra innings, while game two ended in a tie.

The day began with Biola and Westmont trading blows in a nail-biting game one.

Game one opened with stellar pitching on both sides, as neither team impacted the scoreboard until the fifth frame. Gilbert Lopez was the BU starting hurler, dealing 6.1 innings with 94 pitches on the day. The righty posted six zeros on the scoreboard and escaped the outing with two runs given up and four strikeouts.

The BU bats kept the pressure on throughout the game, putting a runner on base in every inning. The team finally cashed in for its first score in the fifth frame. Jonathan Smith single-handedly got over to third base, opening the door for a sacrifice fly from Noah Ruiz and a 1-0 Biola edge.

Ruiz added another RBI in the top of the seventh, before Westmont evened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.

The eighth brought offense galore, as BU and WC combined for nine hits and four runs apiece. The first three runs of the inning came with the first three batters for BU. Bobby Brown laced a double to left field to leadoff and AJ Ortiz brought him home with a single. James Whitman cleared the bases with a two-run homer for a 5-2 BU edge. The Eagles went on to bat through the lineup in the eighth, as Austin Carillo grabbed the fourth RBI with a single.

A 6-6 scoreline carried from the eighth through the ninth, forcing extra innings.

Biola jumped ahead in the top of the tenth, looking to steal the win. Carillo started the rally with a single to the opposite field. Wyatt Duncan drew a walk and the Eagles had two men on with two outs. Brown delivered in the big moment and pushed Biola ahead with an RBI single. Carillo touched home safely and BU was in the lead, 7-6.

Westmont was quick to respond, hitting a solo shot to tie the game at seven. Three-straight hits for the Warriors ended the game, as WC took game one, 8-7.

Once again, BU was first to strike in game two. The Eagles saw a repeat feat of game one, as Whitman left the yard for the second time on Saturday. The left fielder homered in the second frame, bringing home Ortiz alongside him.

Westmont bounced back and took control. After three runs in the second, WC ultimately put together a seven-run streak for a 7-2 advantage.

Carillo helped the Eagles inch back with a long ball in the fifth frame. Another two-run shot came through for Biola, as Carillo picked up his first homer of the year.

Still down by three, Biola went to work in the bottom of the sixth. Whitman stayed hot at the plate and offered another extra-base hit with a double down the right field line. The two-base knock scored Ortiz and Brown, bringing the deficit to one. Sam Lisiak brought home Whitman in the next at bat, tying the game at seven.

Both teams went scoreless in the seventh frame and the game was called at the conclusion of the seventh, resulting in a 7-7 tie.

Carson Speegle finished off the game on the mound for BU, maintaining the even scoreline. Speegle and Andrew Zittel combined for 3.1 straight scoreless innings for the BU defense.

Whitman highlighted the day with his bat, going 4-7 with six RBI, two home runs and a double. He ended the day boasting a .422 batting average for the season.

Biola baseball will complete preseason play on Tuesday, facing Hope International on the road at 6:00 pm.
