Eagles Challenge Cougars

The women’s basketball team nearly upset Azusa Pacific Saturday night, making the Cougars work for their 50-47 Cornerstone Cup win at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team nearly upset Azusa Pacific Saturday night, making the Cougars work for their 50-47 Cornerstone Cup win at Chase Gymnasium.

"I am proud of the effort by our entire team from start to finish," commented head coach Alan Nakamura. "We competed well. Congratulations to Azusa Pacific, they are deserving PacWest Champions. Our players have high character and I am confident we will come together and prepare well to finish strong as we make a push for the conference tournament."

Entering this game APU (22-3 overall, 16-0 PacWest) was on a roll, riding an 18-game winning streak that the Eagles (13-12, 9-8) were eager to challenge.

Biola led six times throughout the first two quarters and was winning at the conclusion of both frames. BU's largest lead was nine points in the first quarter and second-largest was eight points in the second. The score was tied four times in the first half.

The last time the score was knotted in the first two quarters was 30-30 in the second quarter with 1:45 on the game clock. Jessa Thurman downed the go-ahead bucket that allowed Biola to lead 32-30 heading into halftime.

Azusa Pacific heated up in the third quarter where they out-scored Biola 12-7 and led by three points going into the fourth (42-39).

Biola showed their determination, successfully chipping away at APU's lead until the game was tied 47-47. With 58 seconds remaining on the game clock, Kaylen Kamelamela tied up the game with a good layup.

Two scoreless possessions passed and the Cougars ended up making a steal that allowed them to set up the game-winning play. APU ran out the clock and set up Kelly Heimburger to knock down the go-ahead three-pointer with a second left on the clock (50-47).

BU tried to make a quick play, but time expired quickly and APU ended up coming up on top.

Kamelamela led the Eagles' offense, scoring 14 points. Jordan Rabe was next-nest with 10 and Laila Walker scored seven.

Biola plays next against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Eagles and Sharks tip off at 5:30pm at Chase Gymnasium.
