BU Defeated at CUI

The women’s basketball team lost 78-53 to Concordia University Irvine Thursday night at the CU Arena.

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team lost 78-53 to Concordia University Irvine Thursday night at the CU Arena.

The Golden Eagles (10-9, 8-5) limited the Biola Eagles (11-10, 7-6) on offense, holding BU to 39.2 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc while the home team shot 51.7 percent from the field and 35.7 percent downtown.

CUI quickly got ahead in the first quarter and Biola fought to keep it close. Concordia led by as much as eight points which the Eagles would trim to three points with 1:09 remaining in the first (12-9). However, Concordia University Irvine would make the last two baskets which stretched their lead to seven points entering the second quarter.

After the first quarter, the closest Biola got to taking the lead against CUI was in the second. The Eagles went on a five-point run that brought them within three points of Concordia (19-16). Biola's five-point run was composed of five free throws, three of which were made by Laila Walker and two by Kaylen Kamelamela. 

Concordia broke BU's streak with the next basket and continued to go on a big 13-point run which grew their lead to a healthy 16 points. 

Biola had their best offensive showing in the third quarter where they scored 17 points to CUI's 20. Kamelamela led BU's scoring with seven points and was followed by Jaycee Goldsmith (5), Natasa Radovic (4) and Jordan Rabe (1).

CUI led by 19 points headed into the final frame (56-37). Biola cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 17 points early on in the fourth but CUI would extend their back to 25 points by the end of the quarter in their 78-53 victory. 

Rabe led the Eagles' on defense with four defensive rebounds, three steals and a block.

Radovic led Biola on offense with 14 points. Kamelamela and Rabe were BU's next two highest scorers with nine points each.

Biola will regroup and prepare for their next game on Thursday, Feb. 8 against Hilo Hawaii at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
