The women’s basketball team opened up their season with a 53-45 loss to Saint Martin’s at the Coussoulis Arena.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team opened up their season with a 53-45 loss to Saint Martin's at the Coussoulis Arena.

It wasn't the result that the Eagles hoped for but they showed a lot of promise in their season opener.

BU had a slow start, but made adjustments in the second quarter to narrow in on Saint Martin's lead. Biola trailed Saint Martin's 19-10 after the first quarter and cut their lead to just three points after the second.

The Eagles had their best offensive showing in the second quarter where they out-scored Saint Martin's 17-11. Jessa Thurman led the offensive charge with seven points. Laila Walker, Sammie Henley and Sydney Moran contributed a three-point basket and Camden Miller added a point with a made free throw.

Biola kept up the intensity in the third quarter where they matched baskets with SMU. Biola entered the fourth down by a trey but Saint Martin's would distance themselves by out-scoring BU 11-6.

Laila Walker and Jessa Thurman led BU's offense with 12 points each. Sammie Henley executed an impressive defensive performance, leading her with eight rebounds and five steals.

Biola plays next tomorrow Saturday, November 8th at 3:30 p.m. at San Bernardino.
