Eagles Celebrate First Four-Year Senior Class, Win on Senior Day

Biola men’s water polo had plenty to celebrate on Saturday, finishing the regular season with a win and honoring 10 seniors, who helped build the program.

LA MIRADA --- Senior Day commenced on Saturday afternoon for Biola Men's Water Polo with a match against UC Merced. Biola defeated the Bobcats for the second time this season, polishing off a 15-12 victory.

A special group was honored prior to the game on Saturday with the senior day ceremony. The 10 seniors were a part of the inaugural team of Biola men's water polo and are the first group to complete its whole four-year career at BU.

Senior John Grasso made his presence felt in the contest, leading the team with six points. Grasso found the back of the net four times, while dishing out a pair of assists. He was also active on defense, nabbing six steals to lead the team.

The two teams traded goals throughout the first half and into the second half with nine ties. Neither team owned a lead larger than one until a crucial run for the Eagles.

With three minutes to go in the third quarter, Kyle Seifen netted his third goal of the game to give BU a 10-9 edge. Nolan Rapp scored back-to-back goals on the next two possessions to bolster the BU advantage.

Nick Murray netted the first goal of the fourth quarter on a power play and Grasso seemingly sealed the win at the 2:24 mark, giving BU a 14-10 lead.

The Bobcats battled in the final minutes, scoring twice under the two-minute mark. It was Luke Franklin who got the final say, cashing in a goal with 40 seconds left to cap off the win.

Plenty of Eagles were active on offense with eight players scoring a goal. 12 of those 15 scores came with an assist, as Christian Trapp offered the most with four helpers.

Seifen picked up three tallies on Saturday and added an assist for four points. Rapp offered a well-rounded day with two goals, one assist, and five steals.

Mitchell Carpenter held the lionshare of the work in the cage, logging 24 minutes for BU. The senior picked up 11 saves in the win.

Biola will now enter the WWPA Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the west, beginning on Friday at the Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine, California.
