Eagles Arrive

The opening match of the WWPA Tournament featured a Biola victory, advancing the team to the semifinals on Saturday.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola began its title defense at the WWPA Conference Championships at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center on Friday morning. The second seed out of the west Eagles battled No. 3 from the east, McKendree and took care of business in the opening round.

Biola defeated the Bearcats 15-6, maintaining a lead for 27 minutes of the match.

Nothing could slow down the Eagles, who kept their foot on the gas from start to finish. The BU squad netted more and more goals each quarter, eventually collecting five scores in the final stanza, including three-straight with three minutes left in the contest.

The offense was coming from everywhere with eight Eagles finding the back of the net. Four Eagles reached multiple goals with John Grasso pacing the team with five.

Grasso stepped up late in the first half to net a hat trick before the halftime break. The First Team All-WWPA player gave the Eagles a three-goal cushion going into the half and then added two more goals in the second half for five tallies.

In the cage, it was a team effort with Joshua Dachenhausen, Mitchell Carpenter and Casey Cazanjian earning minutes for BU. The group accounted for six saves and three steals combined with Dachenhausen picking up the win.

Biola's best quarter came in the final one, outdoing the Bearcats, 5-1, on the scoreboard to seal the win.

The offense did well to help each other out, accumulating 13 assists on the 15 goals. Nolan Rapp was the key distributor with three helpers on Friday.

Nick Murray put together a nice performance with two goals, one assist and one field block. Gavin McKenzie and Jackson Sumwalt also reached two goals in the win.

Biola will now advance in the tournament and face the top seed from the east, Salem University. The two teams will battle in the WWPA Championships Semifinals at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
