Celebrating Seniors with Resilient Fight

Biola honored its pair of seniors on Friday and fought to the bitter end with PacWest foe Hawaii Hilo.

LA MIRADA --- The final home match of the season commenced on Friday night in Chase Gymnasium for Biola Volleyball (6-19, 4-13 PacWest). The BU squad endured a rough start and forced a decisive fifth set. The visiting Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo (16-13, 11-8 PacWest) found the edge at the end, defeating BU in five.

After the match, BU honored two of its veterans for Senior Night. Sierra Leopold and Katie Cook took a bow and received their flowers for their dedicated time at Biola.

Leopold took to the court in all five sets and found success at the net. The senior tallied seven kills with a .227 hitting percentage. She also led the team in blocks, collecting two solo blocks and three block assists.

To start Friday's match, Biola got off on the wrong foot, trailing big in set one. Despite earning a 7-3 lead in the early going, runs of seven and 10 for the Vulcans sealed a convincing 25-13 set for the visitors.

The Eagles bounced back with a good team effort in set two to even the match. Six different Eagles landed a kill with the team totaling 12 in the set. Biola took the lead with back-to-back blocks at 8-6 and never looked back, maxing its lead at eight two times. The BU defense shut down the UHH attack, limiting them to seven kills and eight errors.

The back and forth continued with Hawaii Hilo returning the favor in set three. The Vulcans took control and never trailed in the set for a 25-20 win. Biola pulled within one point at 17-18, thanks to a five-point run for the Eagles, but UHH rallied to finish the set ahead.

On the brink of elimination, the Eagles showed resilience in the fourth set. The Vulcans had their eyes set on finishing in four sets with a consistent three-point lead through the halfway point in the game. BU chipped away and found its first lead at 18-17 with an ace from Hannah Hanson. The nail-biting set continued with ties at 18, 19, and 21 but Biola edged ahead with consecutive kills from Madison Moore, before Kendall Vandertuig capped off the set with a kill. Moore and Vandertuig delivered in the set with six kills apiece.

The fifth and final set was all Hawaii Hilo. A 4-0 lead set up the Vulcans for success and the visitors finished the match with a 15-9 set five.

Vandertuig was stellar in the contest, posting 22 kills for a career-best mark. She tallied seven kills in the opening set alone and wrapped up the night with a .196 hitting percentage. Moore came next with 13 kills on 34 swings.

Hannah Hanson did it all for BU, contributing eight kills, 20 assists, and two aces on the attack and 15 digs and three blocks assists on defense. She landed all eight kills without an error, and picked up her sixth double-double of the season.

Sophia Knevelbaard was the libero for the final four sets and corraled 20 digs.

Biola will wrap up the 2024 campaign with a three-match road trip in Northern California, beginning at Menlo on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
