Rollin’ on the Road Trip

Biola kicked off its three-match road trip in NorCal with a victory over Menlo on Wednesday night.

ATHERTON, Calif. --- The final stretch of the 2024 season began on Wednesday, as the Eagles opened up their three-match road trip at Menlo College (9-17, 6-13 PacWest). Biola (7-19, 5-13 PacWest) delivered on the night, winning in the fifth and final set. The BU squad made it interesting, winning the first two sets, before needing the fifth set to clinch the victory.

The BU attack did not waste time getting things going. 16 kills from the Eagles pushed the team ahead in the first set. The team scored those kills on 40 swings for a .325 hitting percentage with Kendall Vandertuig leading the way with five in the set. Lexi Lambert set up the squad, offering 14 assists. Biola led for the majority of the set with a peak lead of five with a 25-21 set one finish.

Big runs defined set two, as the Eagles erased an early deficit. After falling behind early, BU drew the line in the sand at 12-9. Seven-straight points flipped the game for BU, as four Menlo attack errors aided the Biola push. A five-point run for BU helped seal the deal, as the Eagles captured set two, 25-18.

Menlo responded with a strong attack in sets three and four. The host squad found their groove and evened the match at two sets apiece with 16 kills in set three and 17 in set four.

Despite losing the momentum, Biola was ready to deliver in the clutch. The fifth set saw the Eagles snowball forward to a 15-7 win, behind two aces and six kills.

Freshman Sophia Knevelbaard added another strong showing, nabbing 19 digs on Wednesday. Vandertuig and Lambert were active on defense as well, grabbing nine digs each.

Vandertuig paced the squad on offense, picking up 14 kills in the win. The impressive performance was her 11th double-digit kill match this year.

Orchestrating the attack, Lambert dished out 36 assists for the Eagles.

The BU squad picked up 13 aces as a group and was led by Bethany Bellfi with four.

Biola will be right back in action on Thursday, facing Dominican at 5:00 pm.
