Service Line Gives Eagles Trouble

Biola was upended by Academy of Art on Friday night, kicking off back-to-back days of PacWest volleyball.

LA MIRADA --- Friday night saw the Eagles enter Chase Gymnasium in a bout with Academy of Art. Service errors plagued Biola (5-16, 3-10 PacWest) throughout the evening contest, as the Eagles fell to the Urban Knights (6-16, 5-9 PacWest) in three sets.

The night opened up with close competition in the first set. Seven ties and four lead changes made for an exciting battle that would be decided by the final points. Payton Tully led the Biola attack with six kills in the set, including one to bring BU within one point of ART U at 22-23. The visitors ran away with the set, though, netting the final two points of set one.

The BU offense slowed in set two, totaling just nine kills. ART U took control with a 8-1 run to break a 9-9 tie and maintained firm control to point number 25. The errors at the service line began for BU with seven in set two.

Biola looked to bounce back and played dead even with the Urban Knights in set number three. The two teams locked up on the scoreboard 16 times and the lead changed hands eight times. Tully continued to battle at the net with five kills and two block assists in the set. With the game on the line, service errors did the Eagles in. Four of the final six points for Academy of Art came by way of BU service error, leading to a 25-23 final.

Tully paved the way for the BU attack, which outhit the visiting Urban Knights, 35-29. The sophomore lefty came down with 14 kills and hit .250 on 28 swings.

Hannah Hanson gave out the majority of assists with 19 and tacked on seven kills with only one attack error.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, facing Menlo at home at 3:00 pm.
