LA MIRADA---The Biola volleyball team pushed Concordia University Irvine to five sets but wouldn't be able to close in their 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 11-15 loss at Chase Gymnasium.
CUI made a statement, taking the first two sets 25-22 and 25-18. The Golden Eagles limited Biola's offensive efficiency, holding BU to hitting percentages of .185 and .054 in the first two sets.
Biola made some adjustments in the third set, sparking a comeback. The Eagles had their most kills of the night and their best hitting percentage (.353) in that set. Madison Moore led BU's offense with five kills in the third frame. Hannah Guzzetti and Payton Tully had three, Hannah Hanson supplied two and Ashlyn Beebe contributed one.
The Eagles kept their momentum going in the fourth set, emerging victorious to force a fifth. Biola capitalized on six Golden Eagle errors and got the job done on offense, recording 11 kills and two service aces.
CUI came out strong in the fifth set, gaining an early lead. Biola looked like they were going to make a late comeback but would ultimately fall short. At set point, Guzzetti made a kill to keep the game alive (14-9) and Sophia Knevelbaard gave BU some late hope with two-consecutive service aces (15-11). However, Concordia held firm and closed out the match on the next point, 15-11.
The Eagles will hit the road and play next in O'ahu against Hawaii Pacific. The match is set to take place on Thursday, October 10th at 10 p.m. PT at the Shark Tank.
