A Fight to the Finish

The men’s water polo team was in for a fight to the finish against Chapman at the Zee Allred Aquatics Center.

ORANGE, Calif.---The Biola men's water polo team was in for a fight to the finish against Chapman at the Zee Allred Aquatics Center. The Eagles and Panthers blew past double overtime, the first sudden death period and the match would be clinched in the second sudden death period where Chapman pulled ahead 11-10.

The Eagles worked their way back from behind and gained their first lead in the fourth quarter. BU was trailing 5-6 when Nolan Rapp tied up the game with his goal at 4:27 and then John Grasso gave Biola the lead with his goal at 3:49. 

Caleb Hernandez expanded the Eagles' lead to 8-6 but the Panthers would tie it up with goals at 2:58 and .05.

The first overtime period was a thriller as both teams scored two goals. Gavin McKenzie was the first to score, giving Biola a 9-8 lead. Chapman responded with the next two goals, one at 1:05 and .22 (10-9). The Eagles kept their composure and Ryle Hibbard managed to score the equalizer with two seconds remaining to keep the game alive.

The intensity picked up as scoreless sixth and seventh periods passed. Chapman ended up clinching the match in the second sudden death period (11-10).

Grasso led Biola's scoring with four goals. Mitchell Carpenter also had an outstanding performance, making 20 saves with a .645 save percentage. The Senior also recorded a steal.

Biola plays next tomorrow at 10:40 a.m. against Augustana at the Haldeman Pool.
