It All Comes Down to Sudden Death

The men’s water polo team found themselves in another sudden-death battle, this time against Augustana at the Haldeman Pool.

CLAREMONT, Calif.---The Biola men's water polo team found themselves in another sudden-death battle, this time against Augustana at the Haldeman Pool. Despite a great effort by the Eagles in a thrilling match, the Vikings would clinch it 11-12 in the second sudden death period.

Spectators were in for a treat as neither team led by more than a goal the entire match. The game was also tied up 10 times throughout eight periods of action. 

The Vikings tied up the game 8-8 at the beginning of the fourth period. Will Tibbetts respond for Biola, putting them ahead 9-8 with a goal at 1:20. However, Augustana came back to tie it up 9-9 with 26 seconds remaining in regulation.

Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period and then both teams scored a goal in double overtime. Nolan Rapp scored first with a goal on a power play (10-9) but the Vikings would charge back with the equalizer with 52 seconds remaining (10-10).

The first sudden death period was a scoreless draw as both teams fought to gain the advantage.  However, Augustana would break through in the eighth period, clinching the match 11-10 with 1:13 on the clock.

Mitchell Carpenter and Joshua Dachenhausen split time in the goal for Biola. Carpenter played eight minutes, had eight saves and a save percentage of .615. The Senior also had two assists. Dachenhausen recorded 36 minutes and made nine saves and had a save percentage of .600 against the Vikings.

Rapp led Biola's offensive effort, earning a hat trick against Augustana. McKenzie was also an offensive threat with two goals.
