Strong Start, Tough Finish

The volleyball team played four competitive sets against Vanguard University but ended up falling short in a 3-1 loss.

COSTA MESA, Calif.---The Biola volleyball team played four competitive sets against Vanguard University but ended up falling short in their 25-21, 23-25, 27-29, 22-25 loss at the Freed Center.

Biola started strong, winning the first set 25-21. BU demonstrated a balanced attack with six Eagles contributing kills. Payton Tully led the offensive effort with four kills, Madison Moore, Hannah Guzzetti and Simi Kapustova each had two, and Hannah Hanson and Emma Fairbairn contributed one.

Another first-set standout was Ashlyn Beebe. The Sophomore went on an eight-point service run that put Biola up by 11 points, four of which were from Beebe service aces.

The last three sets were back-and-forth battles. Neither team led the other by more than four points but the Lions made some adjustments that allowed them to prevail. Biola had a hitting percentage of .393 in the first set and was limited to hitting percentages of .167, .184 and 0.0 in the second, third and fourth sets. The Eagles also increased their errors in each set. Biola recorded three errors in their first set, six in the second, seven in the third, and 10 in the fourth.

Tully led Biola's offense with 13 kills. Tully was followed by Fairbairn who recorded 10 kills and Guzzetti who tallied nine. Guzzetti also was a team leader in blocks, collecting three against Vanguard. 

Biola plays next on Saturday, October 5 at 5 p.m. against Concordia at Chase Gymnasium.
