Eagles Held Off by Sunbirds

Biola suffered a 54-49 road loss at Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.

FRESNO, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team suffered a 54-49 road loss at Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.

The Eagles (11-9, 7-5) played hard but despite a great effort would be unable to get past the consistently-scoring Sunbirds (14-5, 8-3). 

FPU had a strong first quarter where they out-scored BU 18-12 and inflicted their most damage.

Biola bounced back in the second quarter where they opened the frame by scoring the first two baskets. Jaycee Goldsmith made the first basket of the quarter and then Trasara Alexander downed a free throw to put BU within three points (18-15).

After five scoreless possessions, FPU extended their lead back up to five points (20-15) but Alyssa Kubo would retaliate for Biola with a beyond the arc basket. The Redshirt Freshman's three-pointer closed the gap to just two points with 6:57 on the game clock (20-18).

However, Fresno Pacific would come back with the next three baskets and achieve a healthy nine-point lead (27-18) that BU would trim to eight points heading into halftime (33-25).

Biola regrouped during the halftime break and went on to out-score Fresno Pacific in the final two quarters. 

BU had their most successful offense showing in the third where they out-scored FPU 14-13. Kubo led the scoring effort with six points (two three-pointers) and was followed by Goldsmith (4), Kaylen Kamelamela (2) and Laila Walker (2).

Biola cut Fresno Pacific's lead to as much as six points (40-32) in the third, but FPU would manage to bring their lead back up to seven points heading into the fourth (46-39). 

The Eagles continued to chip away at the Sunbirds lead and went on to out-score FPU 10-8 in the final frame. Biola came as close as four points three times in the fourth. The last time was with four seconds remaining but the Sunbirds would hold them off as time expired.

Natasa Radovic led the Eagles with 10 points. Behind Radovic was Kubo with nine, Goldsmith with eight and Jordan Rabe and Trasara Alexander with seven. 

Biola plays next on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. against CUI.
