Eagles Fight for a Late Comeback but Fall Short

AJ Ortiz and Andrew Lujan went yard at home against the Tigers in a thrilling exhibition game.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles hosted the Occidental Tigers in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon. Although the game would not affect either teams season stats, both the Eagles and Tigers were looking to get a feel for how the season ahead would play out.

At the start of Saturday's game, both teams looked ready for the new season ahead of them as the first four innings all had a bit of scoring action in them. Both BU and Oxy put together rallies later on in the game, but Occidental came out on top with a 13-10 victory as they closed out the preseason.

Trailing by one, AJ Ortiz kicked off the action for the Eagles with a lead-off double. Wyatt Duncan was influenced by his teammate and followed up with another double, bringing in the first run of the year for the Eagles.

Biola's starting catcher, Taylor Justus, made his way to first base on an error and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Eagles' dugout started to get hot and Austin Carrillo walked up to the plate and singled to bring in another Eagles run. BU was unable to take a lead, but they closed up the second inning in a 2-2 tie.

Andrew Zittel pitched a scoreless third inning which gave hope to the Eagles offense. Ortiz hit a solo home run to dead center to give the Eagles their first lead of the day. BU was able to get a few runners on base after the home run, but could not find a way to bring them across the plate.

Going into the fourth inning, the Eagles led 3-2 but unfortunately the Tigers got hot and brought in two unanswered runs, giving Oxy a one-run lead.

Jackson LoBianco pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning, striking out all three batters he faced. The Eagles could not follow up with any runs, but they still trailed by just one run after five.

Oxy brought in another run on a double, extending their lead to 5-3, but the Eagles weren't going to let the Tigers slip away just yet.

A walk, followed by a wild pitch gave Andrew Lujan the momentum he needed to steal third base in the sixth inning. He then scored on an error, keeping the Eagles within reach of the Tigers.

Tristan Cazel got the nod on the mound in the seventh inning and did his job, pitching another scoreless inning for the Eagles and striking out two. Similar to the fifth innings, the Eagles were again, unable to bring in any runs. After seven innings, the scoreboard read 5-4, Tigers on top.

The eighth inning got rough for Biola as the Tigers put together an eight-run rally, taking a very comfortable 13-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

Lujan took things into his own hands and hit a home run to deep center field in hopes to get something going for BU.

While the Eagles were unable to keep things rolling after Lujan's homer, they were able to hold the Tigers scoreless in the top of the ninth inning which meant the Eagles had three outs to attempt a comeback.

The Eagles had their bats hot and ready as they headed into the bottom of the ninth down by eight. The first two batters for BU made contact with the ball but the odds were not in their favor. With two outs, two Eagles were hit by pitches, putting runners on first and second. Freshman, Ty Cowley hit a double down the left field line to bring in both runners. Lujan kept his momentum from the previous inning as he reached base on a walk. Cole Wentz brought in another run with the fourth double of the day. Still with two outs, John Lanterman hit another double to keep the Eagles streak going and bring the potential tying run to the on deck circle. Unfortunately, BU fell short and their late rally came to an end with a final score of 13-10.

The Biola boys showed their fans that they are ready to fight this upcoming season. Ortiz and Lujan are two guys to look forward to watching as they both went 2-3, each hitting one out of the park.

Biola will kick off its regular season on Friday, battling CSU Dominguez Hills on the road for a single game at 1:00 pm.
