Offense Powers Opener

BU piled on 16 runs in its season opener, taking down CSU Dominguez Hills.

LA MIRADA --- The 2024 campaign for the Biola Boys began with a bang on Saturday. The Eagles (1-0) took on CSU Dominguez Hills (0-1) at home and found plenty of success at the plate for a 16-5 rout in game one of the doubleheader.

The middle of the lineup was unstoppable for Biola. Hitters two through five collected 12 hits as a group and contributed nine of the team's 16 scores.

It did not take long for the bats to get going, as the BU squad jumped onto the scoreboard in the second inning. Although only one run came across in the second, the runs did not slow down from there. Biola pushed a runner across home plate in each inning following, including three frames with at least three runs.

BU built its initial lead with eight unanswered runs from the second through the fourth. Wyatt Duncan gave Biola the edge with a two-run homer to center field. A nice two-out rally aided the team to a four-run fourth and an 8-2 lead.

The runs kept coming with six extra-base hits from the Eagles. Duncan, Andrew Lujan, and James Whitman each left the yard in the win. The trio also tallied three hits on the day with AJ Ortiz and Luke Caruso joining that club.

Caruso came up big in his collegiate debut, going three-for-four at the plate. The freshman picked up two runs and a walk, while cashing in on all five opportunities in the field.

Bobby Brown toed the rubber to start the game for the Eagles. The junior pounded the strike zone on the way to 10 strikeouts on Saturday. Brown grabbed the win with five innings pitched and four runs allowed.

In the late going, Carson Cody stepped up on the mound. The BU reliever delivered in the seventh, eighth, and ninth with three scoreless frames to earn the save.

Saturday's season opener saw new faces across the diamond with Jonathan Kumai, Isaiah Leon, Caruso, and Ryan Lachemann getting their first action in an Eagles uniform.

Biola is right back at it on Eagles Diamond, taking on CSUDH for the back half of their doubleheader in the afternoon on Saturday.
