Every Second Counts, #25 Biola Beats #24 Brown

No. 25 Biola takes down No. 24 Brown for their first-ever win against a top 25 team in its second contest of the day.

Long Beach, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles (1-1) ended their second game of the Beach Invite with an exciting game-winning goal scored by Maria Roldan Gonzalez in the final seconds of the contest to defeat No. 24 Brown (0-1). It was a tight-knit game but Biola came out on top with an 11-10 win to complete the day.

The Eagles opened up the game with red-hot defense, holding the Bears scoreless for six and a half minutes. While BU's defense was hot, the offense scored two goals to take an early lead.

Brown found its footing and closed out the first period with two goals on back-to-back possessions.

BU's offense was evenly spread, as four different Eagles scored in the first half. Biola took advantage of power plays as three of the four goals scored in the first half were with an extra man advantage. The Bears continued to find their way to the goal as well, taking a 6-4 lead going into the half.

At the start of the second half, the Bears began to run away, extending their lead to 9-5 with just under five minutes remaining in the third period. After calling a timeout, the Eagles entered the pool in comeback mode. Biola started their 6-1 run as they scored four-consecutive goals to end the third period with a 9-9 tie.

Biola's defense stood out once again, as they held Brown scoreless for nearly the first three minutes of the fourth period. The Bears tried to seal the game with a go-ahead score at 5:11 but Biola's Ava LoBue quickly answered back with her second goal of the game, knotting the match at 10 with four minutes to go.

The star of the show, Roldan Gonzalez, took over in the final minutes of the game as she blocked a potential Brown game-winning shot and later on, led her team to victory. Mattie Herzog drew an exclusion with nine seconds left to play, opening up a great opportunity for the Eagles. Roldan Gonzalez took advantage of the power play with help from Lizzy Birch to seal the 11-10 win over the Bears.

Biola was more efficient with their shooting as they shot less than Brown, but had a 61.1 shot percentage compared to Brown's 34.5 percent.

Biola worked together as a team as six different Eagles scored at least one goal to contribute to Saturday's win. Birch was one of the four Eagles to score two or more goals. She also had two big assists for BU. Herzog scored a goal, two assists and drew a key exclusion. Alicia Fregoso stood out in goal, as she led her team with three crucial saves and a steal in the second half.

The Eagles will be back in the pool next Saturday, January 27 as they compete in the Lancer Joust and take on CSUN and UCSB.
