Eagles Go the Distance

The women’s basketball team came up on top, outlasting Westmont College in a 63-51 victory.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team came up on top, outlasting Westmont College in a 63-51 victory.

The Warriors (6-11, 3-7 PacWest) and Eagles (11-8, 7-4) battled throughout the first two quarters. Westmont led by one point after the first quarter (14-13), but the Eagles came back stronger in the second and took over the lead.

The second quarter went back-and-forth until the very end where the Eagles were able to pull ahead in the final seconds. Eleni Cabrera downed a three pointer with 46 seconds remaining that tied up the game (28-28) and then Jordan Rabe landed a buzzer beater that put them up by two points (30-28).

"We came into [the second half] knowing that they were going to come out tough and that we just had to come out strong from the start. We just got back together as a team and played together and that's really what the difference was," reflected Rabe.

The story of the third quarter was a back-and-forth pull between the defenses. Biola held the Warriors to 20 percent in the field and shut down their three-point shot while Westmont limited Biola to 25 percent in the field and 14.29 percent beyond the arc. The Eagles ended up out-scoring the Warriors 11-8 and led by five points going into the final frame (41-36).

After a little over two minutes of scoreless action, Laila Walker won the first basket of the fourth for BU. Walker sunk in a three that brought the Eagles up 44-36.

Biola continued to have their best offensive showing of the night where they out-scored Westmont 22-15. The Eagles were on fire, shooting 53.33 percent from the field and 40 percent downtown. BU led by as much as 18 points in the fourth which was cut down to a 12-point advantage in their 63-51 triumph.

Three Eagles scored in the double digits including Walker (18), Rabe (15) and Natasa Radovic (10).

Biola also played strong on defense, recording 12 steals while Westmont had five. Walker and Radovic led with three each and Kaylen Kamelamela had two. Additionally, four Eagles picked up one. BU executed on WC's mistakes, scoring 17 points off turnovers while the Warriors were only able to grab four points from Biola's mistakes.
