Getting Into a Groove

The women’s basketball team found their groove in their 80-69 victory over Sea Lions at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA—The Biola women's basketball team bounced back against Point Loma, finding their groove in their 80-69 victory over Sea Lions at Chase Gymnasium.

Five Eagles scored in the double-digits against PLNU. Laila Walker and Jaycee Goldsmith led Biola with 14 points each. Natasa Radovic totaled 12, Kaylen Kamelamela had 11 and Jordan Rabe posted 10.

Biola executed on offensive and hustled on defense. The Eagles shot 54.7 percent in the field and 51 percent beyond the arc which is 15.2 and 17.2 percent higher than their season averages.

BU also out-rebounded PLNU 32-23 and 26-19 on defense. Additionally, Biola made three blocks while Point Loma had none and tallied seven steals to PLNU's two. Rabe earned all three of BU's blocks and Walker and Natasa Radovic led Biola with two steals each.

Point Loma led by as much as 10 points in the first quarter, but the Eagles would trim down the Sea Lions' lead to three points heading into the second.

PLNU grew their lead back to six points (21-15) in the opening minutes, but the Eagles would quickly begin turning things around. BU answered back with a seven-point run which allowed them to get ahead by one point. Goldsmith cashed in the bucket that gave them the 22-21 lead.

PLNU took back the advantage in the next possession, but again Biola answered back. This time bigger. The Eagles went on a 13-point run that gave them a 12-point avantage going into the halftime break. Goldsmith downed three downtown baskets, therefore being responsible for nine points of BU's 13-point run.

Biola kept their intensity going in the third quarter and ended up out-scoring Point Loma 20-17. The Eagles highest lead was by 20 points in the third frame and was brought down to 15 going into the fourth (55-40).

The fourth quarter ended up being a challenge as PLNU would turn things around and out-score Biola 29-25. The Eagles lead dwindled down to six points a couple times in the last four minutes, but Biola would remain resilient and ended up winning by 11 points (80-69).

Walker reflected, "Even though our lead was dwindling down we stayed focused and we didn't let it phase us. We kept pushing and that's why we got this win today."

Biola plays next on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. against Westmont at Chase Gymnasium.
