Eagles Prevail in San Diego

The women’s basketball team prevailed against Point Loma, defeating the Sea Lions 59-50 at the Golden Gymnasium.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team prevailed against Point Loma, defeating the Sea Lions 59-50 at the Golden Gymnasium.

"We played together the whole game," reflected Jordan Rabe. "We really fought through it. We had some things that didn't go our way, some balls that didn't bounce our way, but we just kept playing hard together." 

Rabe continued, "People came off the bench and played hard. Everybody in the game worked hard and everyone on the bench was helping out."

After a competitive first quarter, Biola trailed Point Loma by just one point (15-14). 

Kaylen Kamelamela went on to take the lead for Biola in the second, winning the first basket of the quarter that put BU up 16-15. The lead would switch three more times between the squads before landing with PLNU heading into the halftime break (32-27).

Biola answered back with a big third quarter where they outscored Point Loma 14-8 and would win the lead. Rabe scored the first basket of the frame and then the Sea Lions went on a five-point run that allowed them to lead by eight points (37-29).

Alyssa Kubo broke the Sea Lions' run with a downtown basket that cut the gap to five points (37-32) and began a 12-point run for BU that allowed them to get ahead 41-39.

Point Loma managed to make the last two baskets of the quarter which cut Biola's lead to one point headed into the final frame, 41-40. 

The Eagles closed the game with their strongest showing of the night, out-scoring Point Loma 18-10. Kamelamela led the offensive effort, posting nine points. Laila Walker scored four, Jessa Thurman and Rabe scored two each and Jaycee Goldsmith scored a point.

Rabe led Biola's offensive effort with 16 points. Kamelamela scored the second-most points, coming off the bench to post 13 points. Rabe also led her team with seven rebounds.


The Eagles improved 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the PacWest Conference while the Sea Lions slipped 8-7 and 4-3 in the league.

Biola plays next in a Cornerstone Cup matchup against APU on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2:15 p.m.
