Slow Start, Strong Finish

The women’s basketball team had a slow start, but finished strong in their 67-50 loss to Azusa Pacific.

AZUSA, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team had a slow start, but finished strong in their 67-50 loss to Azusa Pacific at the Felix Event Center.

Azusa Pacific was a force to be reckoned with in the first half where they out-scored Biola 37-15. The Cougars found a rhythm on offense, shooting 41 and 38 percent from the field in the first two quarters while limiting the Eagles to 25 and 20 percent.

Biola faced a 22-point deficit headed into the second half but came back ready to fight, coming together to out-score APU in the third and fourth quarters.

Biola scored their most points in the fourth quarter where they out-scored APU 18-16. Jessa Thurman led the Eagles offensive effort with seven points followed by Madi Chang (3), Sydney Moran (3), Jaycee Goldsmith (2) and Trasara Alexander (2).

BU's finish was admirable but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit they were facing. Biola got as close as 14 points behind in the fourth quarter but consistent scoring by the Cougars kept the game out of reach.

Thurman was Biola's highest scorer with 11 points. Alyssa Kubo posted the second-most points on the team with eight and Goldsmith and Natasa Radovic scored six.

Laila Walker performed well on defense, picking up a season-high of four steals. Thurman also led BU with seven rebounds and Jordan Rabe led the Eagles with five defensive rebounds.

Biola's loss brought them 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the PacWest Conference while the Cougars improved 14-3 and 8-0 in league.

APU also won the first round of women's basketball Cornerstone Cup points, but Biola will have a chance to split them when APU comes to play at Chase Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

BU plays next on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Chase Gymnasium against Point Loma.
