Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sonoma Shootout

Sonoma State's consistent offensive pressure proves too much.

SONOMA, Calif. — Biola Women's Soccer dealt with a flurry of chances from its opponents, the Sonoma State Seawolves, on Saturday. The Eagles held strong through the first half, but an early Seawolf goal in the final 45-minute frame led to Biola's demise.

The 1-0 road loss brings Biola's overall mark to 0-3-1 on the young season.

In this one, Autum Monty did all she could to turn aside a fast-moving, shot-stockpiling Seawolves side. The hosting team piled up 17 shots in the game, including 10 in the first half. Monty grabbed three saves in the opening stanza to keep Sonoma State off the board.

Monty's big moment came in the 32nd minute as she was able to stop an effort on a SSU set piece from the corner. The heavy offensive pressure was not altogether unexpected as this Seawolves team scored a three-piece against Azusa Pacific on Thursday afternoon.

Biola managed two shots in the first half, but neither required a save from Sonoma's keeper, Claudia Janese.

The second half began slow for both sides with only one total shot in the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately for Biola, the second shot of the second half found the back of the net and would prove good enough to give Sonoma State the win.

The goal came from Annette Sotelo, who has scored three of the Seawolves' four goals in 2023. She was an All-CCAA player in 2022, scoring seven goals in her freshman season.

Following a yellow card to the Sonoma State bench, Biola came out firing as it sought an equalizer over the final eight minutes.

Ella Grannis had a shot that hit the top crossbar, and then three minutes later in the 86th minute, Briley Phelps had an opportunity of her own, firing on goal but seeing Claudia Janese make her only save of the night.

Up next for Head Coach Brett Croft's bunch is a third-consecutive road contest as they face CSU Los Angeles (1-1-1) on Wednesday next week.
