Fisher Kills in BU Loss

Meredith Fisher recorded 14 kills in opening loss of the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska --- The Biola Eagles (2-2) and Lander Bearcats (4-1) played three close sets in the first match of the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic. Despite an impressive showing from Meredith Fisher, the Eagles fell in straight-sets to Lander.

Fisher logged a hitting percentage of .565 over three sets and recorded 14 of Biola's 37 kills. Dominique Kirton led the Eagles in aces (4) and digs (10). Kirton's four aces was a career-high for a single match.

The Eagles led the Bearcats defensively, with 12 total blocks compared to Lander's nine. The advantage for Lander came offensively, as the Bearcats picked up 10 more kills than BU with a team hitting percentage of .297.

Set One: The Eagles began the first set with a 3-0 lead but the game remained close for most of the first set. The Bearcats and Eagles tied it up for the eighth time at the 24th point. Unfortunately, back-to-back attack errors handed the set to Lander by a score of 26-24. Fisher dominated the first set with six kills and .667 hitting percentage.

Set Two: Once again, Biola started strong with an early lead. A back and forth battle ensued with neither team leading by more than three points. Throughout the set, the two teams were even on the scoreboard 14 times, including at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. The Bearcats finally recorded four-straight points to win the second set 25-22.

Set Three: The third set was underway and the Eagles made the first move with a five-point run. A 9-5 Biola advantage did not last long, as the Bearcats stormed back immediately. Lander put together a stretch of nine-consecutive rally victories to flip the script in the set. BU fought through three match-point opportunities for Lander but it was not enough.

The Eagles play again in the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic on Friday at 12:00 pm PT against Stanislaus State.
