Eagles Strike First in Cornerstone Cup

Biola volleyball won the day in Azusa, taking down the Cougars in four sets to maintain their perfect PacWest record.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The BU squad battled Azusa Pacific (7-7, 4-2 PacWest) on the road in a conference clash and delivered a 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory. The Saturday afternoon featured 15 kills from Meredith Fisher, as the Eagles (11-3, 7-0 PacWest) scored their eighth-straight victory.

Thin margins separated the two teams but the Eagles found the slight edge in different aspects of the game. Biola collected three more kills and one more ace, while hitting three less service errors and two less set errors.

The tight matchup showed on the scoreboard with 31 tie scores and 14 lead changes on the day. The largest lead of the match was seven for the Cougars in the second set, while the Eagles never held an advantage of more than five points.

Fisher came through for the BU offense with a team-high 15 kills on an efficient afternoon. The graduate transfer hit double-digit kills again on 29 swings and a .448 hitting percentage. Only two attack errors slowed Fisher, who also tallied two block assists. Dominique Kirton nabbed 11 kills for the Eagles, reaching her total on 43 attempts to go along with 15 digs.

Abby Brewster orchestrated the attack and dished out 29 assists.

Set One: Biola broke away late in a set that swayed back and forth between the two squads. Attack errors plagued the Cougars with three-consecutive errors to give Biola a 24-18 edge. Brewster ended the set with a kill, giving her three in the set.

Set Two: An early run from APU pushed the host squad into a 10-3 advantage. BU battled back and knotted the game at 13 behind kills from Fisher and Kirton. The Cougars regained the lead with a five-point run and held on for the 25-22 win in set two.

Set Three: The set came down to the wire but the Eagles delivered. A tie at 22 broke with a kill from Fisher and an ace from Hannah Hanson. After an APU timeout, the Cougars turned away one set-point for BU but Juliana Van Ommering cashed in the next rally for a 25-23 finish. Van Ommering came through with five kills in the set on 10 swings for a .400 hitting percentage.

Set Four: 14 ties highlighted a close-knit set. The last knotted score came at 20-20 and the Eagles found a way to end the match. Gracie Guy gave BU the lead with a kill, before back-to-back kills from Fisher set the team up for success. Two APU errors finished off the contest, as the Eagles secured the four-set match.

Biola will continue PacWest play at Point Loma on Thursday at 6:00 pm.
