Van Ommering Shines, PLNU Outlasts Biola

A road matchup against Point Loma needed all five sets, as Biola dropped its first PacWest contest.

SAN DIEGO --- The battle of the unbeatens in the PacWest made for a special bout in San Diego. The Thursday night contest went the distance in a five-set thriller. Point Loma (11-4, 8-0 PacWest) squeezed out the victory at home over the Eagles (11-4, 7-1 PacWest) in a 25-18, 17-25, 23-25, 28-26, 8-15 final. Juliana Van Ommering broke out with a season-high 17 kills in the contest.

Both teams entered the night boasting a seven match winning streak. All seven wins came against PacWest foes, making for the winner of the matchup to claim the top spot in the conference near the halfway point in the season. Both teams were receiving votes in the latest AVCA DII National Poll.

The star of the show for Biola was a true freshman in Van Ommering. The outside hitter was rolling from the jump, totaling seven kills in the first set and 17 for the match. The kills total was her first time surpassing double-digit kills in her collegiate career. The dual threat was effective in the back row as well, picking up 13 digs for her first double-double.

Biola accumulated 61 kills on Thursday with a team hitting percentage of .175. The team produced at least 11 kills in each set except the fifth and posted their best game in the fourth with 16 kills, while hitting .302.

Service aces favored the Eagles, who outpaced PLNU by three. Abby Brewster led the way for the Eagles with four aces, while four different players recorded an ace for BU.

Meredith Fisher and Kendall Vandertuig joined Van Ommering in the double-digit kill club. Vandertuig offered an efficient performance with 10 kills on 26 swings for a .346 hitting percentage.

Set One: Biola led for the majority of the set with the help of a 7-2 run at the halfway mark. PLNU closed the gap and kept the set in balance while the Eagles led by one at 19-18. Brewster led the way home, grabbing a kill to gain the serve, then nabbing two aces to help Biola land the final six-straight points in the set.

Set Two: The BU offense struggled with five unforced errors, as the Sea Lions pulled away with game number two. A six point swing gave Point Loma the momentum and the host squad carried it through to a convincing 25-17 win in the set.

Set Three: Biola bounced back with a great start to the third set. Vandertuig opened the game with two kills and the Eagles built a 7-2 lead. Point Loma responded with a revitalized attack. The host squad totaled 21 kills in the set with a .321 hitting percentage and gained separation by winning three-straight rallies for a 23-20 lead, before finishing off the 25-23 set.

Set Four: With their backs against the walls, the Eagles stayed alive. PLNU held control until Biola turned a 19-14 deficit into a 24-23 lead. One set point got away from BU but the team was then able to fight off two match point opportunities for the Sea Lions. Van Ommering came through with the game-winner, forcing a fifth set.

Set Five: Point Loma took control and never looked back. The first five points went the way of the Sea Lions and the Eagles never recovered and were unable to come within two points of PLNU.

Biola will continue its road trip on Saturday, facing Westmont at 7:00 pm.
