Eagles Drop First Contest of 2023

The final match of the Seaside Invitational got away from the Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola and Lewis met inside Golden Gymnasium on Point Loma's campus on Saturday for the conclusion of the Seaside Invitational. For the second-straight contest, the Eagles took on a team receiving votes in the AVCA DII Preseason Poll but fell this time in four sets to the Flyers.

Biola saw action twice on Saturday with the day beginning in a victorious fashion against Seattle Pacific. A near six hour gap split the two matches for the Eagles, who had a long day of competition. BU took the third set but the team fell in the match, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25.

The BU attack was on par with its previous performances in 2023 with 53 kills and a .234 hitting percentage. Kirton was unstoppable once again, reaching 17 kills on 40 attack attempts. The fifth-year player finished off the invite with 40 total kills and an average of 3.63 kills per set.

Abigail Copeland offered an efficient showing in the middle, posting seven kills on 16 swings. Through the first three matches of the year, Copeland has landed at least six kills and a plus-.300 hitting percentage in each.

In the contest, the Eagles kept pace with the Flyers with both teams collecting 53 kills. The duo of Hannah Hanson and Abby Brewster helped Biola tally more assists than Lewis. Bri Bellfi led the digs effort, netting 22 digs from her libero position.

The difference came at the net with seven more blocks coming through for the Flyers than the Eagles. The defense at the net for Lewis was stout and helped force 20 attack errors from BU.

Payton Tully made her collegiate debut on Saturday, seeing the court in all four sets. The freshman oppo collected nine kills on 31 swings. Fellow freshman Juliana Van Ommering also delivered for BU with eight kills.

Set One: Lewis fought forward in small increments throughout the set. The Flyers opened up a six-point lead at 15-9 and Biola could not cut the deficit to within a point. Kirton was the instigator on offense with six points.

Set Two: Biola answered with an incredible run at the start of set number two. BU was victorious in six-straight rallies for a 7-1 advantage. The squad maintained through 17-11 but the tide turned with a surge from the Flyers. Lewis bounced back with a run of seven points and took control of the set. Kirton ended the run with a kill but the momentum had shifted and the Flyers glided to a 25-22 victory.

Set Three: The third set was much more balanced with neither team leading by more than five points at any point. On Abby Brewster's serve, the Eagles gained the edge that they needed to take a set from the Flyers. Six-straight points behind two kills from Van Ommering helped the Eagles pull ahead. Three Eagles tallied four kills, while the team logged 16 in the set.

Set Four: With the match on the line, Lewis stepped up to close the match. Nine of the first 10 rallies went the way of the Flyers, creating a sizable deficit for BU. The Eagles battled back to tie the game twice but Lewis surged ahead again. LU completed the 25-20 set for a match win.

The Eagles will return to action in a trip to Alaska, beginning with a match against Lander on September 7 at 12pm.
