Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Keep the Wins Coming

Biola men’s water polo stayed ahead of its competition with two victories on Friday.

LOS ANGELES --- Occidental College played host for Biola (8-9) in its opening day at the Gary Troyer Tournament. A day of two games finished with two BU men's water polo wins, as the Eagles took down Occidental and Cal Lutheran to extend their winning streak to four.

The opening game of the day saw Biola dominate the third quarter. BU delivered in a 17-5 victory over the Occidental Tigers, before finishing off the Cal Lutheran Regals with a 10-3 final score.

In their four wins over the last two days, the Eagles have averaged a margin of victory of 11.75.

Game one's big win over the Tigers came at the hands of an 11-0 third quarter. At the half, Biola led by a mere 4-2 edge with four goals from four unique Eagles. The next stanza was an absolute onslaught from the Eagles.

Everything went right for the BU squad that scored four goals before two minutes elapsed in the period. Roman Saroyan highlighted the effort with five goals in the stretch. The freshman scored on the last two possessions of the quarter to push the Eagles to a 15-2 lead.

The defense did its job, holding Oxy scoreless for 14 minutes of game action. With two goals from BU to start the fourth, the Eagles ultimately put together a run of 13-straight goals in the contest.

In the game, Saroyan compiled six goals for a season-best from the young talent. On the day, including both games, the Clovis, California native posted nine goals with two assists to lead the BU offense.

His three goals in game two helped the Eagles take down California Lutheran in the early evening. The defensive effort from Biola was stout, never allowing more than one goal per quarter from the Regals. CLU was held off the scoreboard entirely in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles held their opposition to three goals in 32 minutes.

Mitchell Carpenter maintained his strong play with 12 saves against the Regals. For the 10th time this season, the junior picked up double-digit saves.

On the other end, Biola found consistent success on the attack. The Eagles scored multiple goals in each quarter, while taking advantage of five CLU exclusions.

Caleb Hernandez joined Saroyan with three goals in game two. The sophomore collected back-to-back goals at the end of the third and at the start of the fourth to help cement the BU lead.

Biola will continue the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with bouts against UC Merced at 9:00 am and Mount St. Mary's at 1:00 pm.
