Winning the Marathon

Biola’s winning streak lengthened to seven straight on Thursday with a nail-biting win over Concordia.

LA MIRADA --- BU needed five sets and more but completed the victory on Thursday night on its home court. The Eagles (10-3, 6-0 PacWest) hosted Concordia (7-6, 3-2 PacWest) and maintained their perfect record at home and in PacWest play with a 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 20-18 win.

Biola and Concordia nearly played five sets to 25 and totaled the same net points on the night. The two teams were evenly matched with 37 tie scores and 16 lead changes through the five sets. In the fifth set alone, the two teams locked up on the scoreboard 14 times with a match-high seven lead changes. Each team had its opportunity to pull out the win with two match-point chances for CUI and six for the Eagles.

Biola volleyball pulled out the victory in its sixth-straight five-set match, dating back to last season.

The Biola attack logged 62 kills with Abby Brewster pacing the squad with 17 and a .378 hitting percentage. The graduate student posted a career-best in kills, while logging a triple-double with 24 assists, and 11 digs. She was consistent throughout the lengthy contest, grabbing multiple kills in each and every set. Meredith Fisher came next with 13 kills on 33 swings for a .273 hitting percentage.

12 different Eagles picked up a dig on Thursday with 83 digs coming in for the team. BU's libero Bri Bellfi tallied a match-high with 26 digs and was followed by Brewster with 11 and Kendall Vandertuig with 10.

Set One: Following a tie at 2-2, the Eagles would lead throughout the remainder of the set. Two big runs created the separation needed to take game number one. The first came in the early going with the Eagles winning six-straight rallies for a 8-2 advantage. After CUI trimmed its deficit, BU won six of eight rallies to rebuild its lead to six at 20-14. The BU attack outpaced CUI in kills (14-6) and hitting percentage (.345-.083).

Set Two: A tightly fought set went the way of Biola with crucial play from the Eagles. Serving played a major role with service aces and errors accounting for points in six-consecutive rallies. Three-straight aces from Kendall Vandertuig forced an early timeout from CUI, as the Eagles started strong. Biola turned on the jets halfway through turning a 14-13 deficit into a 20-16 lead behind five kills and a block. Meredith Fisher provided the exclamation point with a kill to secure the 25-22 finish.

Set Three: CUI stole the momentum with an impressive stretch to avoid the sweep. The Golden Eagles won nine-of-10 points to open up a big lead and held on for the 25-17 win in set three. The BU attack slowed with seven kills and six attack errors for a .033 hitting percentage.

Set Four: Biola looked to close out the match and made the first move with a 14-11 advantage off of kills from Emily Smith and Abby Brewster. CUI responded and the two teams tied at 15, 16, and 17. The visitors jumped ahead with four-straight kills and held on to force a fifth and final set.

Set Five: The two teams traded blows tying at each point from two through 10. Biola broke loose for a 14-11 lead with kills from Smith, Fisher, and Brewster. Three match-point opportunities came in vain, as CUI bounced back and evened the game at 14. BU continued to fight for the final push with more chances to end the game at 15-14 and 16-15 but the Golden Eagles always had the answer. CUI seemed to solidify the comeback effort with its own match-points at 17-16 and 18-17 but BU returned the favor. Finally, the Eagles strung together the points they needed. After Juliana Van Ommering evened the game at 18, Smith landed a kill for a 19-18 advantage. Gracie Guy sealed the match with a block, giving BU the thrilling victory.

Biola will be back in action on Saturday at Azusa Pacific at 2:00 pm.
