Eagles Survive

The BU volleyball squad escaped San Francisco on Friday with a victory, defeating Academy of Art in five sets.

SAN FRANCISCO --- The Eagles (8-3, 4-0 PacWest) stayed perfect in PacWest play with a five-set thriller on Friday. The BU team hit the road to face the Urban Knights of Academy of Art (1-10, 0-4 PacWest) and picked up the narrow 25-21, 19-25, 25-15, 25-27, 15-10 victory.

The offense for the Eagles was inconsistent throughout the evening bout but came through in the most crucial spots.

In sets one, three, and five, Biola offered up 38 kills and 14 errors for a .267 hitting percentage. On the flip side in sets two and four, the Eagles combined for 24 kills, 20 errors, and a .038 hitting percentage.

The wide range reflected on the scoreboard with the success for Biola in every other set. Emily Smith was the most consistent threat with 17 kills on 51 swings. The senior managed just four errors with a .255 hitting percentage. Freshman Payton Tully was the only other Eagle to reach double-digits with 10 kills on just 17 attempts.

The defense was headlined by two former PacWest Defender of the Week award winners in Abigail Copeland and Bri Bellfi. The back row was covered by Bellfi, who tallied 30 digs for a career-high. Copeland was the stopper at the net with two solo blocks and six block assists.

BU's pair of setters each dished out 20 plus assists, including Abby Brewster with 29 and Hannah Hanson with 21.

Set One: Smith came alive in the middle of the set to propel the Eagles forward. A 13-13 tie became a 23-16 lead for Biola behind four kills from Smith. Smith landed her fifth kill for the final point of the set to give the Eagles the first game. Brewster added four kills herself as the duo scored nine of the team's 13 kills in the set.

Set Two: Academy of Art broke away late with a series of blocks and BU errors. ARTU grabbed five blocks in their last 10 points, including seven errors from Biola in that stretch. 11 attack errors plagued the Eagles in a 25-19 loss.

Set Three: Biola jumped out early and never looked back. The first five points went to the Eagles and they continued to push their advantage to a game-high lead of 10 points. 14 kills came in from six different Eagles to go along with two aces and four total blocks.

Set Four: ARTU bounced back once again to even the match. A 17-9 lead for ARTU did not dissuade the Eagles, who climbed back with six-straight points. Biola scored in every which way to even the game scoreline and force extra points. The set was knotted at 25-25 before the Urban Knights pulled away with a kill and an ace.

Set Five: A close-knit battle continued with a 8-9 scoreline favoring the Eagles. Biola went on to score the win in six of the next eight rallies to secure the victory. Smith clinched the win with a kill right through the block. The 11 kills in the set mainly came from Smith, Brewster and Tully, who each tallied at least three kills. Biola only had one attack error in the set with a .370 hitting percentage.

Biola will play again on Saturday, facing Dominican on the road at 1:00 pm.
