Eagles Breakthrough at CSUSM

The women’s soccer team secured their first win of the season at CSUSM, defeating the Cougars 2-1.

San Marcos, Calif.---The Biola women's soccer team experienced a breakthrough at Cal State San Marcos, securing their first win of the season at The Cage.

The Eagles (1-5-1 overall) defeated the Cougars (3-2 overall) 2-1, which was not only Biola's first win of the season but also head coach Brett Croft's first career collegiate win as a head coach.

"The second half was all about weathering the storm and fighting together as a team," said BU goalkeeper Autum Monty. "The whole team came together to fight for every ball, every tackle, and to get in front of every shot. The collective defensive effort made my job a lot easier. I just wanted help keep my team in the game. I'm so proud of the fight and grit we showed today and glad we could get coach his first win!"

Biola struck first and fast, Kierstin Havens found the net in the 6th minute with freshman Briley Phelps passing the assist which was the second of the season for her.

Seventeen minutes later, Phelps and Havens would swap with Phelps firing in BU's second goal and Havens supplying the assist.

From there on out the Eagles relied on their defense to hold the Cougars,  nearly shutting them out, but CSUSM would work in a goal in the 89th minute due to a penalty kick opportunity.

Time quickly ran out with less than a minute remaining after the penalty kick and the Eagles would lock in their 2-1 win over CSU San Marcos.

Autum Monty put on a show this afternoon, making eight saves throughout the match. Seven of her saves were made in the second half where she faced  12 shots from the attacking Cougars.

The Eagles will begin conference play at Concordia on Wednesday, Sep. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
