Don’t Call it a Comeback

A slow start did not hamper the Eagles who won in four sets over Fresno Pacific.

LA MIRADA --- A three-match homestand ended perfectly for Biola, as the team remained undefeated in PacWest play. On Saturday, the BU volleyball team (7-3, 3-0 PacWest) hosted Fresno Pacific (4-6, 1-1 PacWest) and overcame a slow start to protect Chase Gym with a 15-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-10 victory.

"I felt really good today and we were super excited for the match," said Meredith Fisher. "We came out and played complacent but in the second set we came out with a fire under our belt."

The Eagles continued to get better throughout the afternoon, increasing their margin of victory in each set. The BU attack reached its peak in set two, logging 15 kills on 32 swings for a .312 hitting percentage.

The difference in the match came in the errors department. The Sunbirds missed the mark on 25 attacks, 14 serves and seven receptions, totaling 46 points for BU. On the flip side, Biola managed just 21 errors.

At the net, Biola disrupted Fresno Pacific throughout the contest, forcing the visitors to a .141 hitting percentage. BU accumulated 13 total blocks compared to just four from FPU. Copeland led the charge with a solo block and five block assists, while six different Eagles logged at least one block.

Fisher tied for the team high with 11 kills on Saturday. The graduate transfer gave all the credit to her setter for her success, "So thankful for Abby Brewster, who always has the perfect sets." Dominique Kirton was also a benefactor of Brewster and Hanson sets, landing 11 kills as well.

Set One: Fresno Pacific broke it open late in the set with seven kills in the final stretch. The visitors won 12 of the last 16 rallies, blowing by the Eagles and securing a 25-15 win.

Set Two: Biola bit back on the attack with 15 kills in the set. The offense was well-rounded with seven Eagles tallying a kill. The Eagles led for the majority of the set but the team needed back-to-back kills from Kendall Vandertuig to squeeze out the 25-22 victory.

Set Three: The errors piled for the Sunbirds, who came out with a negative hitting percentage in the set. 11 attack errors for FPU aided the Biola effort, which avoided those same errors. The Biola block was effective in forcing mistakes, grabbing seven blocks in the set. A red card for FPU gifted the final point of the set for BU for a 25-18 finish in set three.

Set Four: All the momentum favored Biola, as the team secured the first eight points of the set. The onslaught pushed forward into a 25-10 rout for the Eagles. FPU was held to six kills, while BU refused to record an attack error.

Biola volleyball will be back in action on Friday, heading up to Academy of Art for a match at 6:30 pm.
