Biola stayed perfect inside Chase Gym with its win on Friday night.

LA MIRADA --- A second-consecutive home matchup went the way of the Eagles on Friday, as the team welcomed Dominican (0-9, 0-2 PacWest) to La Mirada. BU (6-3, 2-0 PacWest) logged the sweep in the night contest but nearly edged the Penguins in the last two sets with a finish of 25-16, 29-27, 25-22.

The last six sets have ended with Biola on top over its last two matchups. Back-to-back victories put the Eagles at 2-0 in the conference so far in 2023.

Biola picked up the win over Dominican by winning the battle at the net. The Penguins were held to under 10 kills per set, while trailing BU on the day by 15 total kills. Abigail Copeland was a monster on the block, nabbing four solo blocks and four block assists, which matched her career-high for total blocks in a single match.

Payton Tully shined for the Eagles on the attack. The freshman nabbed 12 kills for her first double-digit kill outing of her collegiate career. Tully took 26 swings and logged a .231 hitting percentage on Friday.

Hannah Hanson and Abby Brewster orchestrated the offense in tandem once again, combining for 34 assists with 18 and 16, respectively.

Eight aces came through for the Eagles, including a team-high four from Bethany Bellfi.

Set One: Biola led from start to finish, reaching its best advantage with an 11-point lead. Bethany Bellfi started the big run with an ace at 15-9. Copeland stopped the next three Dominican attacks, earning three-straight points for the Eagles with three blocks. BU would go on to win the set, 25-16.

Set Two: Dominican gained the upper hand early, cashing in on Biola errors. An 11-9 DUC evaporated, as the Eagles won the next nine rallies. Three aces from Bellfi and a pair of kills from Fisher and Vandertuig propelled Biola to a commanding 18-11 advantage. Dominican responded and put the pressure on with an 11-3 run of its own. The Penguins went on to earn four set-point opportunities. Each one was unsuccessful. Biola came through in the clutch and logged three-straights points to steal away set two, 29-27.

Set Three: Another tight set ensued with nine ties and four lead changes. BU saw its lowest kill total in the match with just 10 in the third set but the Eagles still added three blocks and three aces. Mishaps from the Penguins helped push the Eagles ahead with back-to-back attack errors from the visitors giving BU a 21-17 edge. The last four kills for Biola came from four different Eagles, as Biola ended the match with a 25-22 win in set three.

Biola is right back in Chase Gymnasium on Saturday, facing Fresno Pacific at 1:00 pm.
