Taking Big Swings

The Eagles came home for their first game at Splash in 2023 and gave a fight to the 11th-ranked Lancers.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (2-6) gave its fans something to shout about on Thursday morning, as the team hosted its first contest of the 2023 season. The men's water polo squad took on No. 11 California Baptist in its home opener and kept pace with the Lancers (5-4). CBU edged the Eagles in a 10-8 final score.

The ebb and flow of the game was in balance throughout the midweek contest. CBU's largest lead was just three, while the Eagles kept within reach through all 32 minutes of the game.

The Lancers were the aggressors in the early going, earning three power plays in the first three minutes of the game. The visitors opened up a 4-1 lead through a quarter and a half but the Eagles had an answer.

Three-unanswered goals put Biola right back into the game. The first possession of the third period came from John Grasso, who knotted the game at 4-4. Maxwell Osborn cut into the deficit halfway through the second and Caleb Hernandez cashed in on a power play to help the team erase the CBU lead.

A power play goal from CBU helped the visitors to another lead in the third but once again the Eagles answered. Nick Murray found space inside and netted his first goal of the match. The score tied the game at five with four minutes remaining in the third.

The game was won for the Lancers with a run late in the third and early in the fourth. CBU regained the lead and built separation with three-straight goals in a three minute stretch. The two teams went on to trade scores in the final six and a half minutes, leading to the 10-8 final.

The BU offense was well-rounded with nine different Eagles logging at least one goal or assist. Osborn paced the team with three points behind two goals and an assist. Hernandez nabbed multiple goals to go along with a sprint victory.

The reigning WWPA Defensive Player of the Week, Mitchell Carpenter, came through with 10 saves on Thursday. The junior logged all 32 minutes in his fifth double-digit save performance of the season.

Biola will be back in the pool on Saturday at Long Beach State at 12pm and 3pm.
