BU Claims Home Opener

The team’s first home and conference matches lined up on Wednesday for BU volleyball when they took down ART U.

LA MIRADA --- Chase Gymnasium saw its first action of the 2023 season, as the Biola volleyball squad (5-3, 1-0 PacWest) hosted a contest against Academy of Art (1-7, 0-1 PacWest). The setting was perfect for an Eagle victory with the team taking care of business in three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23.

Biola protected its home court on Wednesday night, outpacing the Urban Knights by 14 kills and three aces. The attack was relentless for BU, as the team never trailed through the first two sets. The only tie score occurred at 5-5 in the first set before the squad cruised to a pair of set victories.

The Eagles offense was consistent throughout the night, posting a plus .250 hitting percentage in each and every set. The team's total in kills improved with each set as well with 12 in the first, 15 in the second and 18 in the third.

Attacks came from all over the place. Seven Eagles grabbed multiple kills and eight logged at least one, including 11 from Dominique Kirton, 10 from Emily Smith and nine from Abby Brewster. Brewster handled double duty with the attack impact along with a team-high 20 assists.

Katie Cook brought the power for BU, sending home four service aces behind a big and accurate serve.

Set One: The Eagles used small runs to create an advantage. Consistent strong play earned the team a 10-point lead off of a Cook ace at 23-13. Meredith Fisher closed out the set with a kill assisted by Brewster.

Set Two: Biola led from start to finish. Academy of Art hung around with a 7-2 run in the middle of the set but the Eagles created separation with Brewster's serve. The senior helped the team to six-straight points, building a 23-16 lead that would hold for a 25-20 finish.

Set Three: The third and final set was a close-knit fight, as the Knights put together their best game. Neither team led by more than three throughout the set, as ART U held the lead five separate times. A timeout from Biola at 23-23 reset the tone for the Eagles, as they looked to clinch the match. Smith pushed Biola to set point with a kill, before an ART U attack error ended the set and the match.

Biola is back inside Chase Gymnasium on Friday at 5:00 pm when it hosts Dominican.
