Holding their Ground Against the Best

The women’s soccer team held their ground against Western Washington, playing a close match that ended up in a 2-0 loss to the No.1 Vikings.

LA MIRADA— The Biola women's soccer team played a close match against Western Washington, making the United Soccer Coaches' No. 1 team work for their 2-0 victory at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles held Western Washington, the back-to-back NCAA National Champions, with a scoreless first half.

Biola pushed to create some scoring opportunities, but just fell short against the Vikings' defensive line. The Eagles
got in six shots in the first half with Kierstin Havens contributing the BU's only shot on goal. Peyton Nelson lead her team with two shots in the first half.

Western Washington slightly out-shot Biola 7-6 in the first half, but had three shots on target to BU's one. Junior transfer Autum Monty stepped up in a big way for Biola with three saves in the 12th, 14th and 21st minutes.

The second half presented trouble for the Eagles who gave up a penalty kick in the 47th minute which resulted in the first goal of the game by Western Washington.

Five minutes later, the Vikings cushioned their lead with their second goal. Biola buckled down on defense but struggled to turn the tables on WWU. Serena Andrade took Biola's only shot in the second half and the Eagles ended up being out-shot 1-8 by Western Washington in the final frame.

Monty made two more saves in the second half, making her grand total five in the night while facing 17 shots. Monty's final saves were recorded in the 61st and 87th minutes.

"We were really appreciative of the work rate not only of the starting group but of the girls that came in the second half and battled hard," reflected head coach Brett Croft. "The result didn't go our way but this performance showed that we can battle with any team in the division. I think the girls feel encouraged and we are really excited to come back on Saturday and to play Monterey Bay."

Next Up: The Eagles take on CSU Monterey Bay on Saturday, Sep. 2 at 4 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
