Eagles Upset Sea Lions

The men’s tennis team upset ITA’s nationally-ranked No. 24 Point Loma at the Biola Tennis Center.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's tennis team came together with a huge 4-3 win over ITA's nationally-ranked No. 24 Point Loma at the Biola Tennis Center.

Eleven days ago, the Eagles lost a close 4-2 battle to the Sea Lions at the PLNU Tennis Courts and came back today with a huge 4-3 upset at home.

"I'm super excited about this win," exclaimed head coach David Goodman. "Point Loma is a great team and we knew going in that we had some adjustments to make after losing a close one at their place."

Goodman continued, "We won matches that we lost last time around which was key. Alexey lost to his opponent at one. He fought hard today to flip his match after losing his first set. Adrian also lost at three and today he was able to flip his match and then Callen lost at six last time around and he was able to come through and flip that match today. We also lost number one doubles last time and we were able to come through with that big win. We made those necessary adjustments and improved from last time, I'm very proud of the guys."

Biola lost the first doubles match 3-6 on court 3, but came back with wins on courts 1 and 2.

Antonio Rosales Varona and Adrian Solorzano won 6-4 over PLNU's Tyler Davis and Alexander Leischner and then Sebastian Herrera and Callen Hein delivered the final blow with a 6-4 win on the second court.

Point Loma won the first singles match on court 2 which leveled the score, 1-1. Adrian Solorzano then gave BU the nudge with a 6-4, 6-2 win over PLNU's Fabian Penzkofer (2-1).

The Sea Lions received wins on courts 5 and 4 to regain the lead (3-2) which left courts 1 and 6 in action.

Alexey Prokopchuk was dueling PLNU's Leischner on the first court and Callen Hein was battling PLNU's Alejandro Castaneda on the sixth. Prokopchuk lost his first set 0-6 and came back with two 6-4 wins to tie up the match for Biola, 3-3.

All eyes were on court 6 as Hein was still working against Castaneda. Hein lost a close first set 63-77 and came back to defeat Castaneda 6-4, 6-1 which clinched the match for BU.

The Eagles improved 10-5 while the Sea Lions fell 15-2. Biola plays next on Wednesday, Apr. 12 at 1 p.m. against CUI at the CUI Tennis Courts.
