Naranjo Tallies Four in Loss

Biola hosted for the second time in the 2023 season and fell to No. 11 UC Santa Barbara, despite four goals from Veralie Naranjo.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles (12-14) continued their homestand on Good Friday, battling the 11th-ranked Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara (16-8). The visitors pulled away in the second half and defeated Biola by a final margin of 15-9.

The BU squad and the Gauchos were nearly even through 16 minutes of game time. Through the first half, UCSB held a mere 5-4 edge over the Eagles at the Splash Regional Aquatics Center.

The attack was well-spread between the team of Eagles with four unique players scoring the four goals in the opening half. Veralie Naranjo and Rachel Spadt found the back of the net in the first quarter, while Marija Mijuskovic and Lizzy Birch went back-to-back to close out the second.

After the break, the visiting Gauchos went on a run. UCSB tallied three-straight to start the third and then added four-straight to end the third and start the fourth. Through the two rallies, the visitors collected three goals off of powerplays.

The only person to interrupt those two runs for UCSB was Naranjo. The attacker maintained the BU two goals per period trend, nabbing two herself in the middle of the third quarter.

The push from UCSB opened up a 12-6 advantage for the visitors with just five minutes remaining in the game. Maria Roldan Gonzalez, Naranjo, and Kourtney Pyle scored in the closing minutes but the comeback push was not there.

Roldan Gonzalez led the defensive effort with four steals, helping the team to eight total on Friday. Damaris Kientz was the goal keeper on record for the Eagles and picked up eight saves in the contest.

BU will be back in action at home next Friday at 1:00 pm, taking on WWPA foe, CSU Monterey Bay.
