Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

23 Steals, 21 Goals, 1 Big Win

Biola surges to a huge conference win and sits on the brink of clinching the top seed in the west.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Women's Water Polo became the first Western Water Polo Association west region team to four conference wins with a 21-10 victory over CSU Monterey Bay on Friday.

The Eagles were locked in as a team on Friday, scoring five first-period goals to set the tone for a successful afternoon. Five different Eagles scored to account for those five first-period tallies, including contributions from Mattie Herzog and Marija Mijuskovic.

BU scored seven times in the second to zip out to a 12-4 lead at the halftime break. The match certainly had a different flavor from the narrow 8-7 victory Biola claimed in their last meeting with the Otters.

Kourtney Pyle led the way with three first-half goals, but the most memorable scores were post putaways by Kaycie Bradshaw and Ava LoBue to account for goals 11 and 12 for BU to close out the half.

The third period held Monterey Bay's best effort. The Otters actually outscored the Eagles 4-3 in the frame, and the visitors used a streak of three-consecutive goals late in the third period to get things to the closest they'd be all day at just a 13-8.

Biola followed that with its own three-goal scoring streak to put the game back out of reach and then cruised to the finish. The Eagles scored on 59 percent of their shots, which is the second-best shooting percentage of the season.

Damaris Kientz and Samantha Rainey split time in between the posts, with Rainey making a highlight reel save on a one-on-one breakaway effort by CSUMB. Kientz had five saves, Rainey had three as the Eagles held the Otters to just 40 percent shooting.

Veralie Naranjo finished as the game's leading scorer with six tallies. Pyle (3), Maria Roldan Gonzalez (3), Mijuskovic (2), Herzog (2) and Lizzy Birch were the other multi-goal scorers for BU. Birch, as per usual, was a phenomenal facilitator with four assists.

The Eagles' defense was incredible, piling on a season-high 23 steals in the game, being led by six steals from Rachel Spadt

The win allows Biola an opportunity to clinch the top seed in the WWPA tournament with a win on senior day. The Eagles improved to 13-14 overall and 4-1 in league competition.

Biola hosts Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 1 p.m. A senior day ceremony will happen on deck 20 minutes before the opening sprint. The Eagles will honor Maria Higginbotham, Alyssa Pimienta, Pyle, Rainey and Lauren Westphal.
