Sour Fifth

A lopsided fifth frame changed the day in game two between the Eagles and Sea Lions.

LA MIRADA --- The momentum of the day continued, as Biola (12-20, 6-8 PacWest) and Point Loma (21-9, 9-5 PacWest) went to game two of their Friday doubleheader. The contest was tight-knit through four innings but the visiting Sea Lions broke it open in the fifth and took home the win by a final margin of 11-5.

A one-run bout in game one leaked into game two, as the teams looked even at the jump.

Nationally-ranked Point Loma scored in its first appearance at the plate, loading the bases with a pair of hits and a walk. Brandon McClean worked his way through the tough situation and made it out of the first with just one run given up.

Biola responded by capitalizing on a leadoff walk. Oscar Serratos earned his way on by a walk before moving to second with a sacrifice bunt from Tyler White. As Serratos looked to steal third, Wyatt Duncan roped the ball into left field to score the BU center fielder.

PLNU kept up the pressure and loaded the bases once again in the second frame. A single and sacrifice fly brought home a pair before the Eagles got out of the jam.

The Eagles found their answer in the third. Serratos was the first to reach base with a single and was followed by a walk by White. The pair stole second and third, setting up runners in scoring position with no outs. AJ Ortiz got barrel on his swing and hit a double to left-center, allowing White and Serratos to easily touch home.

The big break for Point Loma came in the fifth. In the top of the frame, the visitors strung together four-straight hits, while tallying six runs with two outs and seven total runs in the inning. The outburst pushed the team ahead of the Eagles, 10-3.

Taylor Justus added an RBI to his day in the bottom of the fifth. Ortiz walked on base, leading to a big hit from Justus. The catcher lasered a line drive down the line and it rolled to the corner for a standup double, scoring Ortiz with ease.

Biola threatened one last time in the seventh and final frame, down 11-4. The Eagles put runners on all three bases with one out on the board. Noah Ruiz delivered with a single back up the middle, scoring the final run for Biola in the 11-5 finish.

Ortiz ended the day 2-2 at the plate with a pair of walks and two RBI. Justus also contributed a multi-hit day with a 2-4 game two.

BU will return to the diamond on Saturday with a doubleheader at Point Loma beginning at 12:00 pm.
