Neck and Neck with No. 24 PLNU

BU took on No. 24 PLNU on Good Friday and came up just short in game one.

LA MIRADA --- Biola baseball (12-19, 6-7 PacWest) welcomed Point Loma to Eagles Diamond on Good Friday for an end of week doubleheader. The two teams traded blows and were separated by the thinnest of margins. One run was the difference in game one, as 24th-ranked PLNU (20-9, 8-5 PacWest) edged the Eagles, 7-6.

The Eagles were firing on all cylinders in the early going. Pitching, fielding, and hitting all came together for a Biola advantage.

Andrew Beauvais got himself out of a jam in the first, facing runners on second and third with no outs. The righty hurler retired three-straight to escape the frame with no damage done.

Austin Carillo added to the defensive effort with strong plays out in right field. In the second inning, a pop up nearly found a hole down the shallow right field line but Carillo came flying in. The sophomore took a smooth slide and made the catch, while making the last two outs of the frame.

The BU bats did their job with four runs in the first two innings. Oscar Serratos and Tyler White started the game with a pair of singles and AJ Ortiz brought home Serratos with a sacrifice fly to left. The offense stayed hot in the second with three-straight hits to open the team's at bat. James Whitman provided a jolt with a triple down the right field line, scoring Sam Lisiak for a 2-0 Biola lead. The inning continued with a two-run jack from Serratos. The leadoff man took a fastball and sent it over the fence in left-center field to double the BU lead.

The visitors responded by plating seven-unanswered runs. Two in the third and five in the sixth turned the game on its head, as Point Loma jumped out to a 7-4 edge.

BU immediately inched back with big hits in the bottom of the sixth. Whitman touched every base with a moon shot to left field. The freshman logged a solo shot for his second of the season. An Austin Carillo walk and Serratos intentional walk maintained movement on the base paths. Wyatt Duncan helped the Eagles cash in on the opportunity with a single that made it to the outfield for an RBI single. Two runs brought the Eagles within one at 7-6 with three innings remaining.

Gilbert Lopez turned it up in relief for the Eagles. The righty was dealing with three innings pitched and one hit allowed, offering a scoreless effort on the mound.

Unfortunately for Biola, the Sea Lions returned the favor on the mound. PLNU kept the Eagles off the board in the final three frames to secure the 7-6 finish in its favor.

Whitman and Serratos led the Biola bats with two hits and two RBI each, while Serratos added three intentional walks to his outing.

Game two is set to start at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.
