Eagles Fall to CUI in First Round

The men’s tennis team lost 4-2 to CUI in their first round of the 2023 PacWest Championships.

SURPRISE, Ariz.---The Biola men's tennis team fought, but were unable to surpass Concordia in their first round of the 2023 PacWest Tennis Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.

The Eagles (12-8) fell behind the Golden Eagles (10-5) when they lost the doubles point. CUI won on the second and third courts to take the point. 

Antonio Rosales Varona and Adrian Solorzano recorded Biola's 7-5 win on the first court which tied doubles up 1-1 overall before the Golden Eagles won in a 77-64 tiebreak on the third court to clinch the doubles point. 

Alexey Prokopchuk and Alex Sedeno put forth a good effort against CUI's James Caddies and Tim Nutz.

Singles got off to a rough start when Biola recorded losses on courts 6 and 3. The Eagles started turning it around when Rosales Varona won 6-2, 6-0 over CUI's Edmonston. Isaac Cordova kept the momentum flowing Biola's way with a 6-1, 6-4 win on the fifth court which left two courts in action and Biola needed to win both to win.

Prokopchuk was dueling CUI's Leon Czarnikau. Prokopchuk lost his first set 4-6 and won the next in a tiebreak (63-77). 

Solorzano was also in action on the second court, facing CUI's Julius Seifert. Solorzano lost his first set 4-6 and came back to win the next 6-3. Solorzano ended up losing his final set 2-6 which clinched the match for the Golden Eagles (4-2).

Prokopchuk's match was left unfinished with him leading 1-0 in the third set. 

Biola now entered the consolation bracket where their highest finish could be fifth place. The Eagles will take on Hawai'i Hilo in their next match on Friday, Apr. 21 at 1 p.m.
