APU Outpaces Biola

The offenses went toe-toe at the jump on Friday but the Cougars came away with game one.

LA MIRADA --- The bats were quick to action at the start of Friday's doubleheader between Biola (14-21, 8-9 PacWest) and Azusa Pacific. The visiting Cougars (24-16, 16-9 PacWest) maintained the pressure and pushed forward for a 13-5 game one win, despite three homers from Biola.

Biola hosted the Cougars for the front half of a four-game series over the weekend. Entering the series, APU was receiving votes in the latest NCBWA NCAA DII National Top-25 poll.

The Eagles came out swinging, going deep twice in the opening frame. Wyatt Duncan and AJ Ortiz went back-to-back leaving the field, showing off their power at the plate. Duncan's homer brought home Tyler White as well, giving the Eagles three runs in the frame and a first inning lead.

The runs kept coming with five runs across the first three innings for BU. Oscar Serratos joined the home run club with a solo blast to left field in the second inning. Four singles in the third added another with an RBI single from Sam Lisiak.

Azusa Pacific responded with a pair of big innings at the plate. Five runs gave the Cougars an edge after the second frame and the team added three more in the top of the seventh. A persistent attack kept the visitors ahead and helped them to 13 runs in nine innings.

Blake Wentz put together a solid outing in the middle relief for the Eagles. The freshman strung together three innings of work, allowing just one run and posting two scoreless frames.

Ortiz was one of four Eagles with multiple hits in the afternoon contest. Over his last four games, the BU third baseman has posted three multi-hit outings.

BU and APU will return to Eagles Diamond for game two around 3:50 pm on Friday.
