Eagles Persevere

The men’s tennis team persevered through unfavorable odds to defeat Holy Names 5-2 at the Biola Tennis Center.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's tennis team preserved through unfavorable odds to defeat Holy Names 5-2 at the Biola Tennis Center.

Biola had a handful of players out today which forced them to forfeit the third court for doubles and the sixth court for singles, giving Holy Names two walkover wins.

This gave the Hawks a leg up on doubles by automatically leading 1-0 and put the pressure on BU to win on courts 1 and 2. Sebastian Herrera and Adrian Solorzano came through first for BU with a 6-0 win on the first court. Meanwhile Alexey Prokopchuk and Alex Sedeno were battling HNU's Bhatia Rajan and Phil Schollhorn. Prokopchuk and Sedeno ended up edging the Hawks' second court players in a close 7-5 match.

The Eagles had a sigh of relief as they began singles 1-1 and not 2-0 to the Hawks, thanks to their key doubles point win.

Prokopchuk recorded the first win of singles, defeating HNU's Patrick Wnuk 6-1, 6-1 which put Biola ahead 2-1. The Eagles lead however was short lived as the Hawks picked up a win on the fifth court which tied the match, 2-2.

That left court 2 through 4 in action with all eyes watching. Herrera secured an important 6-4, 6-1 win on the second court which nudged BU ahead 3-2. Next finished Solorzano who clinched the Eagles victory with his 6-4, 6-2 win over HNU's Schollhorn.

The fourth court was still battling on as Alex Sedeno was competing versus HNU's Ellison Greco. Sedeno's first set fell in Greco's favor 77-65, but Sedeno would rally back to trump Greco 6-0, 10-5 in an exciting matchup.

Sedeno's win solidified Biola's 5-2 victory over the Hawks. The Eagles play next on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 11 a.m. against nationally-ranked No.9 Hawai'i Pacific at the Biola Tennis Center.
