Eagles Fall Behind in Singles

The men’s tennis team worked ahead with the doubles point, but fell behind in singles which resulted in their 5-2 loss to No. 23 Hawai’i Pacific.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola men's tennis team won the doubles point, but ended up losing the match to ITA's 23rd-best team in the nation, Hawai'i Pacific, on Saturday evening at the Biola Tennis Center.

Biola worked ahead with the doubles point, winning 6-4 on the first and second courts. Court 2 pulled through first for the Eagles, thanks to Sebastian Herrera and Callen Hein. Antonio Rosales Varona and Adrian Solorzano took care of business shortly after on the first court where they clinched the doubles point, 1-0.

But the Eagles would struggle in singles where they lost four-consecutive matches which would clinch the match for HPU. Biola fell on courts 4, 3, 6 and 2 which put the Sharks ahead 4-1.

That left two courts in action, Alexey Prokopchuk on the first court and Isaac Cordova on the fifth.

Prokopchuk picked up what would be the Eagles only singles win on the first court, coming back from behind to defeat HPU's Robin Sanz. Prokopchuk lost his first set 6-4 but came back with a big win in his second set 78-66 to continue to the match. Prokopchuk then took down Sanz (HPU) in the tiebreaker (10-8) to make the overall score 4-2.

Meanwhile, Cordova was in his own battle against HPU's Mile Matic. Cordova lost his first set by a small margin of 7-5 and then fell in a second-set battle 77-64 to the Sharks' Matic which solidified the match's final score of 5-2.

Hawai'i Pacific improved 6-4 overall while Biola dropped 5-4. The Eagles will regroup and play next on Tuesday, Mar. 14 against Hawai'i Hilo at 4 p.m. at the Biola Tennis Center.
