Eagles Edged by Sea Lions

The men’s tennis team lost a hard 4-2 battle against Point Loma at the PLNU Tennis Courts.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--- The Biola men's tennis team lost a hard 4-2 battle against a talented Point Loma squad at the PLNU Tennis Courts. Both Biola and Point Loma are nationally-ranked by ITA, BU is nationally-ranked No. 46 by ITA and PLNU is ranked 10 slots ahead at No. 36.

Biola got off to a strong start, winning the doubles point. Sebastian Herrera and Callen Hein tabbed the Eagles first doubles win on the second court, 6-2 and then the Sea Lions evened the field with a tiebreaker win on the first court. Anotonio Rosales Varona and Adrian Solorzano lost a close set to ITA's nationally-ranked No. 25 doubles partners: Alexander Leischner and Tyler Davis (PLNU). 

Alexey Prokopchuk and Alex Sedeno battled to win the deciding set 7-5 on the third court, successfully picking up their teammates and claiming the doubles point. 

PLNU took the 3-1 advantage with wins on courts 2, 1 and 3. Herrera faced ITA's 25th-best singles player in the nation, Davis, who defeated Herrera 6-0, 6-1.

Prokopchuk fell next on the first court. ITA's No. 29 Prokopchuk was pitted against No. 7 Leischner. And Leischer showed why he was ranked in ITA's top 10, defeating Prokopchuk 6-3, 6-0. 

Solorzano then lost a close match on the third court. Solorzano lost his first set in a tiebreak and then lost his second set 4-6.

Rosales Varona cut into the Sea Lions lead with his three-set victory over David Strassburger. Rosales Varons won his first set 6-3 and then suffered a 3-6 loss in his second set which forced a winner-takes-all third set. Rosales Varona prevailed 6-4 in the deciding set. 

Callen Hein's loss on the sixth court was the last domino to fall in an airtight matchup. Hein lost a three-set battle to PLNU's Nabeel Khan. Hein won his first set 6-2 and then lost the final two with identical scores of 5-7.

Isaac Cordova's match on the fifth court was left unfinished. Cordova was leading 6-1, 3-6, 5-4 to PLNU's Alejandro Castaneda. 

Although Biola fell this time, they will have a chance to defeat Point Loma again on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Biola Tennis Center.
