Slipping Away

The Eagles let go of a 5-0 lead to fall in game two on Monday.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- An early advantage was not enough for the visiting Eagles, who could not overcome Point Loma on Monday. The Sea Lions (16-8) picked up the sweep, after Biola (8-17) led by five but fell to PLNU by a final margin of 6-5.

Despite the outcome, head coach Jesse Rodgers was happy with how his team played, "I felt like we played well all day. We hung tough through both games but we just were not quite able to hold on."

Everything looked great in the early going of game two, as BU impressed at the plate and in the field. Through three innings of work the visitors had built a 5-0 edge in a seven-inning affair.

The offensive burst for BU came in the second frame. Two quick outs seemed to spell doom but the Biola bats stuck with it. James Whitman started the scoring with a double down the left field line to bring Noah Ruiz around to the plate.

Evan Rowe added another with a single to score Whitman. With Rowe on first, Jonathan Smith stepped to the plate and saw two strikes go by. On the third pitch, Smith brought the power and hit his first collegiate home run. The ball sailed over the center field fence to bring the lead to 4-0 for the Eagles.

The momentum carried over into the third inning, as Wyatt Duncan led off with a double on the second pitch of his at bat. Taylor Justus followed with an eight-pitch walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. A flyout came next to move Duncan to third, setting up Lujan to extend the lead. Andrew Lujan laid down the sacrifice bunt to bring Duncan home and give the Eagles a 5-0 advantage.

The pitching got the job done in the three frames from the hands of Tristan Cazel and Blake Wentz. Cazel drew the start and logged one inning and a strikeout, before Wentz took over and delivered two frames with only one hit allowed.

Once the fourth inning hit, the tide turned. Suddenly, the Biola offense went quiet and the Sea Lions came alive.

Home runs hurt the Eagles, as PLNU found its power. Two solo homers in the fourth kicked things off for Point Loma, before they added a single run in the fifth off a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

Going into the sixth, the BU lead had been trimmed to 5-3. Two more Sea Lions reached base by a hit-by-pitch but were separated by two outs, needing just one to end the inning and move into the seventh and final frame. Unfortunately for Biola, the next batter only made things worse for BU. For the third time, Point Loma left the yard for a three-run homer to give the host squad a 6-5 lead.

Three Eagles came to the plate in the seventh and all three could not reach base. PLNU secured the final in its favor.

Biola will return home for conference play, taking on Academy of Art on Friday and Saturday with doubleheaders beginning at 12:00 pm.
