McClean Keeps Scoreless Streak

Brandon McClean extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings in 2023 with five on Monday in a loss against Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Point Loma hosted the back half of the four-game series between the Eagles and Sea Lions on Monday. Biola made the trip down, after splitting Saturday's doubleheader at Eagles Diamond. Game one on Monday began with a win for Point Loma with a late rally for a 4-2 finish.

Brandon McClean drew the start for the Eagles and continued his impressive run on the mound. Monday saw his fifth appearance, entering the day with seven innings pitched and zero runs allowed.

The scoreless streak was extended with five empty frames with McClean in control. The junior gave up just two hits in the outing, while never allowing a runner past second base. McClean avoided throwing a walk and tossed just 51 pitches.

The strong defensive start opened the door for a Biola lead. The BU lineup struck in the third inning, taking advantage of back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved Jonathan Smith and Tyler White to second and third, so AJ Ortiz could log an RBI for a 1-0 BU edge.

PLNU responded in the sixth. The Sea Lions put two men on with two hit-by-pitches and then scored both with two base hits.

Now down by one, the Eagles did not wait long to get back at the host squad. A pair of singles sparked another rally for BU. Smith was in the mix again, putting down a bunt with the two runners on base. An errant throw kept the movement on base to score James Whitman and knot the game at two.

The final break came in the bottom of the eighth, as PLNU looked to put the game away. The Sea Lions eked out a pair of runs to take the lead with only one more chance for the Eagles offense. BU was unable to respond for the 4-2 final score.

Through nine innings and a combined 14 hits, neither team could find the explosive offensive play with a total of zero extra-base hits.

Game two is set to start at 3:00 pm in San Diego.
